Construction Training
Construction training will re-launch in 2010. More details to come!
Academic Skills
In-house academic training consists of a self-paced course designed to improve literacy and numeracy – our students typically tests below the sixth-grade literacy level upon entering the program. Many students also pursue off-site studies such as GED preparation or community college courses.
Life Skills
The program utilizes the 21st Century Success Principles curriculum, developed by the New Orleans Jobs Initiative over a ten-year period, which addresses participants’ understanding of workplace culture and is tailored for African-American youth with little connection to the labor market. We also provide personalized and comprehensive case management services to help students overcome obstacles such as unstable housing and unreliable transportation. Outside referrals enable students to address substance abuse issues, pursue domestic violence counseling, and obtain legal assistance.
Culinary Training
Students are mentored by restaurant staff in five restaurant workstations (steward; floor service or wait staff; pantry chef; sous chef; and department chef) during Cafe Reconcile’s lunch service, which serves 120 to 150 customers daily. Additional instruction outside of restaurant serving hours, including regular demonstrations lessons by local executive chefs, provides more in-depth skills development.
